Hello, this is NohProblem Consulting, your source for Canadian immigration information!

Today, let’s explore the updates made by IRCC on October 4th regarding the PGWP eligibility regulations, announced following the September 19th enhancements to Canada’s Temporary Resident Program.

First, let’s briefly explain PGWP.
PGWP stands for Post-Graduate Work Permit, a work visa available to graduates from designated Canadian learning institutions. For certificates, it allows work for the duration of study, and for diplomas or higher degrees, it can be up to 3 years.

It’s advantageous as an open work permit without a designated employer, offering more flexibility compared to other visa types, making it useful for those considering immigration after studying in Canada.

Changes have been made to the eligibility requirements for PGWP previously available upon graduation from designated learning institutions.

Language Scores

According to the September 19th announcement, starting November 1st, applicants applying for PGWP will be required to provide language scores. However, with the recent update, applicants applying before November 1st, 2024, must also provide language scores.

For English, scores are measured using CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks), and for French, NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens). Scores must cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and must be from tests taken within the last 2 years.

CLB scores can be validated through CELPIP, IELTS, or PTE, while French proficiency can be validated through TEF Canada or TCF Canada.

For applications after November 1st, eligibility will be limited to specific fields of study related to the program completed.

Fields of Study Eligibility

Starting November 1st, PGWP applications will only be accepted for graduates from bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs in the following five fields:
– Agriculture and agri-food
– Healthcare
– STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)?
– Trade
– Transport

These broad categories reflect areas of labor shortage in Canada. To verify if your field of study qualifies for PGWP, it’s recommended to check the link provided.

Today, we’ve reviewed the updated PGWP eligibility criteria effective October 4th. PGWP offers an open work permit without a designated employer, allowing graduates to gain work experience and potentially prepare for permanent residency in Canada.
